A SAFE HAVEN
Throughout the centuries, Argentario retains its charm
by Karen Guthry

The configuration of the Argentario is unique. The small peninsula that extends 15 Km into the Thyrrenian Sea takes its name form the promontory of the Argentario, of which the highest peak reaches 635 m. On the east side, two sand dunes called Tomboli, connect the peninsula to the mainland thus enclosing the lagoon of Orbetello.

Argentario’s landscape is rugged, with lots of caves and rocky hills covered in dense Mediterranean scrub. The jagged coastline occasionally presents small, sandy cays — ideal for swimming in the crystal clear waters.

The numerous fortresses and towers that pepper the area, demonstrate the strategic importance it enjoyed throughout the centuries. Since Phoenician times, this location has been crucial to seamen who considered Argentario a safe haven.

Once dedicated exclusively to fishing, Argentario’s economy today depends largely on tourism. From Porto Santo Stefano ferries depart several times a day to the Isola Del Giglio, a popular summer destination , while close to Porto Ercole, Marina Cala Galera is one of the best-equipped boat landing places in the Mediterranean.
