ROOM 15 Locarno’s alternative night life by Christine K. Zarb
I'm so glad that my friends Mauri and Jamf decided to come to Locarno during the film festival. A truly entrepreneurial pair, the two started out with the Living Room in 1997, opening the first lounge-style club south of the Swiss Alps. Thanks to Mauriís managerial expertise and bar tending experience combined with Jamf's passion for Acid Jazz and his flair for collecting authentic 70s furniture, when the two put their heads together, the result is never short of astounding. The pair has already earned much popularity and acclaim with their Living Boat cruises, when the whole operation is shipped onto a ferry with two bars, various lounge areas and a live band playing under deck. The cruises, which take place during the summer, are a hit and invariably sell out.
This year the two have dreamed up the Room 15 concept, which consist of the original club moving to Locarno for the duration of the film festival and reviving an old discotheque on the ground floor of the Grand Hotel. Bringing with them their host of d.j.s and inviting their favorite bands, the Room 15 turned out to be another humongous success amongst fans and festival-goers looking for a cool place to hang out.
The musical menu offered clubbers a range of musical candy from Chill out to Funk, Jungle, Hip-hop and Lounge to Dub and Global Vibes. The setting was like taking a trip back to the 70s, but with an edge. And the fact that the place smelled like an old cupboard didn’t interfere with anyone having a funky good time.
When I asked my friends for the secret of their success they replied that the Living Room is not about them. Rather it’s a concept. Itís about style and music. "Ultimately, Room 15 like the Living Room and the cruises, they’re are all about the people who come and enjoy themselves; it’s about the music and if people enjoy that and dance and have a good time, then we’ve been successful in what we set out to achieve."
