SUBLIME SWIMMING HOLES
The hills around Locarno guard a fresh surprise
by Christine K. Zarb

Just imagine, it’s summer and it’s hot. Sweltering hot and your city’s just been invaded by hordes of cinema people: film makers, crews, actors, critics and film buffs. The hotels are all booked out and there isn’t a free parking spot left in town. What do you do?

Run for the hills! Fortunately, in Locarno, this is easily done. The nearby valleys of Verzasca and Maggia offering a readily available antidote to the tourist epidemic.

Although Val Verzasca is stunning, the closer and larger Val Maggia is a favorite among the local festival-goes who wish to escape the throng of foreigners. Both valleys are ideal for sunbathing on large boulders, or lazing around under a shady tree. The rivers Verzasca and Maggia who give their names to the valleys, in some points create large pools of crystal clear mountain water, deep enough for a refreshing swim.

These are two of Locarno’s best-kept secrets. So, next time you’re at the Festival, why not head to the river for an invigorating dip between favorite film screenings?
