A NORTHERN GET-AWAY
Holidays in Bretagne
by Karen Guthry

Thanks to its Celtic past, the region of Bretagne, in France’s Northwest, is imbued with a strong sense of identity that finds its roots in the magic of art and tradition.

The second most-visited holiday destination in France, Bretagne offers a varied landscape with an infinite number of possibilities: from secluded country getaways to health resorts. You can discover ancient castles and excellent gastronomy. You can rent a houseboat and navigate along 400 miles of rivers and canals, or you can relax on any of the white sandy beaches.

The natural rugged beauty of Bretagne’s landscape creates a stark contrast to the numerous castles and landscaped gardens that pepper the area. Visitors will find it impossible to resist the lure of historical places such as the city of St. Malo and the mystique of Mont Saint-Michel.

Classified by UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site, Mont Saint-Michel and its bay are subject to violent tides. It is said that during the equinoxes the waves rise as quickly as a galloping horse.
