FAST FORWARD TO FUTURE
The changing pace of travel
by Karen Guthry

Now that air travel across the world is experiencing a crisis and the public is somewhat anxious about airline security, we are rediscovering alternative means of travel.

Less expensive and environmentally friendlier, train travel is enjoying a true
resurgence. Trains are back in vogue and it would appear that they are here to stay, affirming themselves as the futuristic way to travel.

A major role in this shift is being played by Alp Transit Gotthard AG, the Swiss company that is responsible for the construction of a 58 Km long railway tunnel.

Alp Transit’s plan to build a high-speed railway line across the Alps, will allow high-speed trains to cut straight through the massive mountain ranges.

Integrating the European high-speed railway network, the project includes the construction of the world’s longest tunnel, which will shorten the journey between Zurich and Milan by 40km and reduce traveling time by an hour.

Scheduled to be completed in 2012, the tunnel will extend and connect already existing tunnels. With no more slalom curves and helical tunnels to negotiate, passenger trains will be traveling through the Alps at speeds up to 249km/h.
