INVISIBLE RECORDINGS An Etnic-flavored night by Nina Ondine
At first glance, Riccardo Studer (Rich) and Jonathan (Jo) are an unlikely pair. One is lanky, with a sharp goatee and a lime-green beret propped on his bald skull; the other has soft wavy hair and wears slacks and glasses. But in spite of their exterior differences, Rich and Jo have one thing in common: a passion for music. Music lovers from way-back, their favorite tunes range from soul to funk, South American rhythms to acid jazz.
The two met 15 years ago and first worked together as DJs, sharing their musical collections to entertain audiences. These days, the duo have complementary activities: Rich is a sound engineer and still DJs; Jonathan runs the most popular Tapas bar in town, Etnic. With their wide range of musical tastes, you can count on a good time when this combo sets out to entertain the Thursday night crowd at Etnic.
The musical set includes DVDs played through a Power Book and projected onto a screen, on the stage. To my surprise, I find it’s inspirational to watch silent movies while Rich does his thing at the turntable. Though his preferences lean towards documentaries and nature films, he’s also partial to Scooby-Doo, ‘Because he’s, like, House,’ he says.
Recently, Rich and Jo joined forces to release a new record label, Invisible Recordings. Based in Lugano, the label intends to fill a gap in the market. The concept behind the label is to network with like-minded people in Europe and give DJs and musicians the chance of being heard. ‘We just want to put out what we like, without pressure or compromise. There are so many things that are made thinking marketing first. We do the opposite. We want poetry, love, freedom and dreaming,’ says Jo.
It’s a weeknight and we’re itching for somewhere to go, then I remember it’s Thursday and that Thursday night has become the new Friday night at Etnic. So we head into town to mix with the cool crowd and relax in a laid-back atmosphere, savoring a selection of delicious cocktails (my favorite is the strawberry Caipiroska). Etnic is the place to let your hair down, nibble on the morish finger-food and indulge in a good drink. But the most intoxicating mixes of all are Rich’s cocktails of house, jazz and groovy vibes. !Viva las Tapas! | | | | The purpose of this banner is to raise funds for a new VR community project VRMag will launch in a few months. | |
