WHO AM I ?
Rich Studer, our new columnist, introduces himself and his subject matter.
by Rich Studer

Editor’s Note: This is the first column in a series written by Rich Studer. Rich is a partner of a production studio -Digilab, owns a recording label – Invisible Recordings – and is a confirmed audiophile and electronic music fan. Beginning with this issue, Rich will be regularly contributing a 2-part column: Music for Computers, and Computers for Music. I’ll let Rich explain the rest.

This title may confuse you but no, you haven’t fallen into an existentialist course on how to find your way in this life…you need no teacher for that. It’s just an attempt to present my humble person to your attention.

I have been involved with audio since I was born. Even before. My mum told me that I used to kick her tummy when I was no more than an embryo, whenever there were interesting noises around us -- music, industrial, speeches, animals, whatever.

I began to DJ at the age of ten, more or less, I hadn’t the money for the records (and still don’t) so I recorded the tunes I liked on the radio and made my live mixes using two cassettes players and my brother’s battered mixer. The results were debatable but it was a good school and a nice way to approach girls…

Although I was passionate for audio, I never considered it to be a serious way of life, so I became a professional sound engineer relatively late, in the middle of my twenties, but since then I have never left the audio domain. Going deeper and deeper, I continued to DJ and began producing my own tracks, alone or in collaboration with other musicians and recently founded a record label, Invisible Recordings.

VRMag approached me, asking if I could write something for the people on the Internet. I accepted enthusiastically. I have free hand and like people who work for a community.

I’d like to bridge the gap between real world and computer science. That’s why I’ll try to write about music in computers and on computers in music.

yours
Rich
