HARRY POTTER QTVR LINKS Is Apple promoting QTVR ? by Michelle Bienias In what some see as a small shot of adrenalin for QTVRs, the latest Harry Potter movie is being supported with VRs of some of the movie’s more recognizable settings, all available in low, medium or high resolution (Lockhart’s Closet, Hagrid’s Hut and Dursleys’ House). Why quibble about the quality or technical aspects of the VR, we should be happy that Quicktime VRs are being used in such a high-profile campaign, right? Well, yes and no. Of course, all of us in the VR community would love to see this technology reach a wider audience BUT we hope that the VRs used will be of the highest-quality possible. As Jim Anders recently discussed in an iqtvra mailing list, the main point is that Apple’s promotion of the Harry Potter QTVRs is a positive sign, and we shouldn’t dwell on the ‘minor technical issues or critiques of these images’. Ken Turkowski seemed to agree with Anders, but added that the ‘immersive imagery industry benefits from positive spin. It does the whole industry good when you show off outstanding QTVRs’. He then goes on to add that we need to encourage improvements and innovation by supporting the software makers and buying their upgrades. All valid points. So, in the interest of helping to evangelize QTVRs, we provide you with a few links to the Harry Potter VRs. And if you know of some we’ve missed, please bring them to our attention.
