DAYDREAMING IN SAINT TROPEZ, FRANCE
by Karen Guthry

The thing is, I love the sea — being close to it, it fills you with its presence. You breathe in the sea salt and you know it’s doing you good. You feel yourself lifted of the usual thoughts. You look at the waves and your eyes drink in the ultramarine of the Mediterranean. It’s magnificent.

Slowly, I walk along the shore pressing my footprints into the sand saturated by the waves. I watch my steps turn into clear pools that reflect the clouds. A seagull dives into the sky and white sails shimmer in the vivid daylight.

I ask myself: “What is it like, to live by the sea?” I come from a country of lakes and steep mountains. The skyline there rises sharply against the horizon. I’ve lived in large cites where the sky was forever obstructed from view. Here, I look at the shimmering line where the sky meets the sea and think that I am amongst a tribe of sea-people. Everyone here is a fisherman or a sailor at heart; they know the sea, its changing colors and moods, its many smells. I’m in a land of people who belong to this sea and I am jealous — because they will always carry it inside them.
