SANTA MARIA DEGLI ANGIOLI CHURCH St. Mary of the Angels church. by Michelle Bienias
Where: Via Nassa, Lugano, Switzerland, in the Italian canton of Ticino.
When: 2:30 p.m., Thursday, June 25, 2003
What: Santa Maria Degli Angioli, or St. Mary of the Angels church. Unassuming from the outside, spectacular on this inside, this former convent houses several frescoes by Bernardino Luini, known for his style that is similar to the great Leonardo da Vinci.
The largest and most popular fresco shows seven episodes of the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ and the church contains two other frescos by Luini – Madonna with the Infant Jesus and the Last Supper.
Who: Bernardino Luini was from Lombardy and lived in the early 16th century. There is some conjecture that he may have been a student of da Vinci’s in Milan, but there is no evidence to support that claim. Luini painted these frescos around 1530, and it is believed he died several years after. Luini is known for his delicate female figures, warm colors and his power to create emotion. Some of his other works can be found at the Ufizzi in Florence and the Louvre in Paris.
Equipment: Equipment: Photographer Giuseppe Pennisi used a Fuji FinePix S2 Pro Digital Camera and Agno’s 350 mm camera head. He took 10 shots each at 0°, and +-45° angles. There was strong natural light coming in through the windows so no additional lighting was used. Camera set to daylight. Pennisi was test-driving the new Agno’s camera head and was pleased with its design and precise construction, easy and intuitive utility, and with its valet-style carrying case. On the negative side, changing the number of shots involves an overly complicated system involving opening the side of the head to change the metal disks. Hopefully, future releases will create a 0 degree, 1 and –45 stops along the vertical rotation axis. Overall, considering the price and the ability to shoot multirow, the new Agno is an interesting tripod head solution.
