THE PICASSO MUSEUM IN ANTIBES, FRANCE
The Picasso Museum at the Château Grimaldi in Antibes

Like many artists such as Graham Greene, Guy de Maupassant, Jaques Prévert and Claude Monet, the celebrated painter Pablo Picasso spent a portion of his fertile career on the shores of the French Riviera.

Through his friendship with Dor de la Souchère, curator of the Antibes Museum of Art, Picasso was offered to use part of the Grimaldi Castle that in 1929, had been turned into a museum. During the autumn of 1946 Picasso worked in the studio in the Chateau. Four months later, he donated 181 drawings and paintings to the town of Antibes. Shortly afterward the museum was renamed, the Musée Picasso.

The collection was based on the theme: Joie De Vivre (the joy of life) inspired by the young painter Françoise Gilot — mother of Picasso’s third child, Claude, and with whom the painter was living in Golfe-Juan. These works capture the translucent light of the region expressing a renewed hope in life, following the end of the war.

In 1947 Picasso worked at the Madoura pottery workshop where he produced about 2’000 ceramics that same year. Of this collection, 76 pieces can be admired at the Picasso Museum.
