VIRTUAL VISTAS OF ARAGON, SPAIN.
by Michelle Bienias

If you’re planning a trip to the northern region of Spain known as Aragon, you’ll want to view the beautiful panoramas of its most well-known sights at www.caiaragon.com. Although the site is in Spanish only, the cubic panoramas are worth a visit and are available in two sizes for both dialup and high-speed connections.

Aragon is still primarily known as the birthplace of Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon, as this former kingdom nestled at the foot of the Pyrenees is quite rural and off the usual tourist track. It is comprised of three provinces, Huesca in the north, Zaragoza in the middle, and Teruel to the south. The region is rich in history, beautiful landscapes tradition and folklore.

Huesca, formerly Osca, is the provincial capital and was founded in the 1st century BC and in 1096 it was captured by Peter of Aragon and was the region’s capital until 1118, when the title passed to Zaragoza.

Ainsa is a charming historical town in Huesca with a medieval plaza that is home to the 12th century Iglesia de Santa Maria church. The ancient town of Jaca, dating back to the 2nd century BC, was once an important medieval city and the capital of the Kingdom of Aragon, is home to Spain’s earliest Romanesque cathedral and the Basilica del Pilar in Zaragoza is also worth a visit, containing some of Goya’s paintings, many others of which can be found in Aragon. Jaca and Zaragoza are also popular stops on the Pilgrim’s Road to Santiago de Compostela.
