THE STATUE OF LIBERTY IN PARIS, LAURENT THION A panorama of the Parisian Statue of Liberty. by Michelle Bienias
When: January 9, 2004 Who: Photographed by Laurent Thion of Ecliptique.com What: The Paris Statue of Liberty There’s more than one Statue of Liberty (in fact there are quite a few scattered around the globe)! This statue is mounted next to the Pont de Grenelle, a bridge crossing the Seine, 1.5 km south of the Eiffel Tower; it looks down the river towards the Atlantic Ocean and its big sister in New York. (And there is another, even smaller, replica in the Luxembourg Gardens.) It is a bronze model used by Frederic-August Bartholdi during the construction of the New York statue and was erected to commemorate the centenary of the French Revolution (inaugurated November 15, 1889 in the presence of Bartholdi). Height of the statue: 11.50 meters (20.50 meters with the pedestal). Weight: 14 tons
Where: Île aux Cygnes, Pont de Grenelle, Paris. Why: “Only because Tito Dupret's QTVR appeared in Issue 14 of VRMAG!” jokes Thion. “I waited for nice weather to shoot this VR - only December 31 was without fog and rain. I went to Paris at 16.30 pm and waited for a good mix between skylight and street lighting. After one hour, in very cold temperatures, I discovered that the floodlights for the Statue were broken!” Thion later went back and took these panos when the lights were repaired.
