What: On May 1st, ten countries joined the European Union, namely: Cyprus, Czech, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia. For the occasion, the city of Brussels and the EU organized a popular gathering around the Parc du Cinquantenaire Who: Photographer Mickael Therer of www.mediapiculture.net. Why: “Because it is a memorable day that will bring more changes in Europe, and popular gatherings are great places to be (with or without a camera).Because a moving subject is always a VR challenge, and capturing immortal cathedrals and breathtaking landscapes is fun for a while but it lacks a human factor. Because I never tried an action VR before I was eager to try a journalistic VR shooting.” How: “The lens I chose to work with is new and uneasy used handheld, as I naturally tend to level down and move away with the subject...A tripod being so invasive in a crowd it was obvious for me to try a monopod setup to force me to stay on the same spot.I turned away with 30 pictures on 60 degrees increments plus two handheld for zenith and nadir. This setup helped me concentrate on action rather than on leveling, and it turned out that the final stitching uses 8+2 pictures out of which only two pictures are not exactly in the same time sequence and had to be added to solve seams. So in the whole it is a temporal sequence shot under two minutes.” Shoot details Monopod with kiwi+ head, Nikon 10.5mm on a D100, shooting at JPG quality, processed with Nikon capture, PTMac and Photoshop, sound processed and added in QuickTime.
