Who: Ignacio Ferrando, of Abaco Digital

When: August 16, 2004

Where: Natural Reserve of Sierra y Cañones de Guara, Huesca, Spain. This natural reserve covers almost 48,000 hectares in the foothills of the Pyrenees.

What: The river Vero canyon – the most popular and frequently visited canyon in the Sierra de Guara and the whole province of Huesca.

Two park employees guided Ignacio to a place that represented the feeling of the park. The park has many canyons and is one of the best areas to canyoning. “We chose one of the most popular tracks there, the ‘Rio Vero’”, Ignacio writes. “Thousands of people use this track because it is easy and requires only a walk and swim, without a rope and harness.”

Why: It's part of a big project about protected landscapes in Aragón that Ignacio is working on.

How: Manfrotto tripod and pan head, Nikon D1x, Nikon 10.5 f4, Photoshop, PTMac, CubicConverter

Some difficulties encountered on the shoot:
”Access - this is a part of the canyon called "the darks" because the canyon is really deep and in some places the walls are closed and we don't see the sky. To get there, normally it is necessary to swim some hundreds of meters in deep water. We were not equipped to protect our equipment, and is not easy to swim with a heavy tripod and pan head... the guides proposed to walking through a very dense forest, so we walked one hour to advance a few hundred meters... and we returned the same way

”Dynamic range - the place we chose was very fine because we could see the water, the walls and also the sky; the problem was that between the high key and the low key areas there were many stops of light... I have made six different exposures of each shoot 1/5, 1/10, 1/20, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250 at f11 and merged it before the stitching process.

”Placing the tripod - I searched for some time to find the right place, for example, in August there isn’t a lot of water and I wanted the water illuminated by the sun. When able, I put the tripod near of the edge of the wall and took the shot. The problem was that in some shots I really needed to take care to not fall into the water! I was lucky that a group of people passed when I was shooting and I took some pictures and added it in the pano to put some references that I find very necessary in a place like this.”
