PANORAMIC VIEW OF BARCELONA FROM TIBIDABO by Michelle Bienias Where: Barcelona, SpainWho: Photographer Giuseppe Pennisi What: Panoramic view of Barcelona from Tibidabo. At 542m (1778ft), Tibidabo is the highest hill in the wooded range that forms the backdrop to Barcelona and is a great place for views over the city. Take the glass lift that goes 115m (377ft) up to a visitor's observation area at Torre de Collserola telecommunications tower. Why: The pano is shot from Tibidabo, where you can see the entire city stretched out at your feet: the Sagrada Familia, the twin towers of the Olympic port, the harbor and many other sites. In the distance you can see the communication tower added for the 1992 Olympics. The church in the background is the Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor (Sacred Heart), although it’s architecture is not remarkable for Barcelona. click here to view fullscreenThe name of this mountain on which a communications tower was added for the 1992 Olympics is explained in most guidebooks for those who don’t know Latin and/or are not familiar with the New Testament account of Satan’s tempting Christ by offering him dominion over all he could see from the highest mountaintop if he would swear allegiance to a devilish master. “I will give to you ( all that you see)” is a rough translation of what the name Tibidabo means. Hours: May-mid-June Wed-Sun noon-8pm; mid-June-Sep Tue-Sun noon-8pm; Oct-Apr Sat-Sun 11am-8pm Located on the northeastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula and the shores of the Mediterranean, Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain in both size and population (1.5 million). It is also the country’s hippest town featuring the architecture of an eccentric genius named Gaudi, museums with collections by Picasso and Miró, and alive with vibrant, stylish and fun-loving people. Visit Arounder Barcelona and tour the city: take in the Fundacio Joan Miro, one of Spain’s greatest artists; the famous Picasso Museum; Gaudi’s monumental yet unfinished cathedral Sagrada Familia; the historic Barri Gotic, Barcelona’s oldest quarter; and Gaudi’s spectacular Park Guell, among many others.
