MODELS VS OFFICERS AT LONDON'S SLIMELIGHT CLUB
London's longest running alternative club, the Slimelight.
by Michelle Bienias

Who: Shot by photographer Will Pearson, of Digital Dream World.

Where: Electrowerkz, 7 Torrens Street, Islington, London, UK

When: June 14, 2005

What: Slimelight Club.
The officers in the pano are made up of policemen, bodyguards and special forces servicemen, who happened to be in the same room as the two scantily clad ladies.

The longest running alternative club dealing in industrial, power-noise, cyber-synth, ebm, cyber-goth, darkwave, trad and modern goth, plus crossover and related alternative sounds, Slimelight is the most well known club of its type in the world with a wide and varied mixture of nationalities in attendance on any given week.

Slimelight Club started in the 1980s as a regular squat party and its name was a parody of another popular London club at the time, The Limelight. It reached its zenith in the 1990s, building a worldwide reputation without any kind of marketing – no flyers, posting or advertising – it was strictly word of mouth.

The three-floor members-only club is open every Saturday from 10pm to 7.30am (when the Tube starts running). The Club claims a membership base of around 10,000, and non-members have to be signed in by a member, although its website states that “as long as you look the part (ebm/goth /darkwave /black scene, etc.) it is not a problem to get in even if you don’t know any members”.

Why: Pearson was helping out on a shoot promoting loudspeakers for a company called ‘Fuel’. On the night this pano was taken, they were sharing the venue with a group shooting each other with plastic bullets.

How: Pearson used a D70, a 10.5 Lens and a Manfrotto 303SPH: It took an hour to set the shot up, and 20 minutes to shoot. Pearson used a selection of studio lights to create the final effect. “I think the shoot was pretty straightforward, with perhaps the biggest issue being keeping the officers at sufficient distance from the two models!”
