(Present-day Turkey still refutes Armenian claims that 1.5 million were massacred in what was then the Ottoman Empire - or that the deaths constituted deliberate genocide.) The complex, which includes an underground museum, is located on top of a hill, which is the highest point of the park. The park is situated at the edge of the old section of the city of Yerevan. On April 24, 1965 a demonstration – the first of its kind in the Soviet Union – was held in Yerevan, Armenia. Thousands of protesters gathered for 24 hours on the 50th anniversary of the start of the genocide and demanded that the Soviet Union officially recognize the Armenian genocide and build a memorial in memory of its victims. Since that day, Armenians gather each 24th of April at the memorial, which was completed in 1968. Why: Yeznaian explains, “As an Armenian I always wanted to visit the memorial and knowing that many other Armenians feel the same way made me make this VR”.
