ROSH PINA, GALILEE – BEFORE THE ROCKETS by Michelle Bienias
Photographer: Uri Cogan of uricogan.com. Where: Rosh Pina, Israel. When: April 2006 What: Village of Rosh Pina This panorama by Uri Cogan shows his wife Susan with a view of Rosh Pina (Hebrew for "cornerstone") village and valley behind her, which has now been hit by rockets. Thirty immigrant families from Romania founded the Upper Galilee village in 1882, making it the first modern Jewish agricultural settlement in Palestine. Today the village has a population of approximately 2,400. Rosh Pina“Until this war erupted, the residents of Rosh Pina were preoccupied with a different war: to save the village's old elementary school and kindergarten,” reports Haaretz.com. The two institutions were built in the period from 1885 to 1899 and were the first to teach modern Hebrew in Palestine, but the local council signed a divisive contract involving tourism real estate. With the onset of war, tourists have fled the village and the fight over the schools is no longer a topic of discussion. In Rosh Pina and all across northern Israel, the resorts, hotels and bed-and-breakfasts that normally are full this time of year are closed or virtually empty. View more of Uri Cogan’s panoramas.
