SECOND LIFE: YOUR WORLD. YOUR IMAGINATION.
by Johnny Vaccaro

Unlike most MMOs, Second Life encourages its users (they're called "Residents") to literally build the world with the construction and programming tools provided for them. So what started as virgin continents and islands with mountains, meadows, and waterways has been transformed by their hands. This is what you're seeing here-cities of the future and the present, castles and towers of the past and of the imagination; nightclubs, fashion shows, and comic book fantasy lands. (The American Wild West town in Image 7, is actually a movie set for a machinima video called "Silver Bells and Golden Spurs"-see the final product here.)

Many of these places I've written about in New World Notes, my blog devoted to Second Life as an emerging society. Image Five, for example, depicts the Lost Gardens of Apollo created by Dane Zander, featured here, while Image Ten depicts the island of "Taco", is mentioned here, while Image Nine depicts Midnight City, created primarily by fashion/experience designer Aimee Weber, who is now a contributor to my blog.

The most amazing thing? These images, while wonderful, are only the beginning to an endless act of creation that never ends.
