VALENTINO AT RICHARD MEIER'S ARA PACIS MUSEUM IN ROME 45 years of Style in the modern temple of classicism. by Marco Trezzini In order to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Valentino's career, a fashion extravaganza took place in Rome between the 6th and 8th of July 2007.The inauguration of "Valentino a Roma: 45 Years of Style” was held at the Museum of Ara Pacis in Rome. The exhibit of 300 dresses and rare archival materials, celebrating the 45 years of creativity of Valentino - through a spectacular staging - put Rome - once again - at the centre of international fashion and glamour.  click here to view Valentino a Roma: 45 Years of Style panoramaPerfect synthesis of classicism and modernity, the Museum, recently renovated and extended by the great architect Richard Meier, is either an invitation to peace among people or a symbol of the new futuristic vocation of Rome. That said, it was the ideal place to host the work of the couturier who, more than anyone else, put together an ageless ideal of beauty and its shapes during the natural evolution of seasons and fashion. The exhibit developed inside and around the Ara Pacis, the altar among the most significant evidences of art in Augustus age, symbol of peace and prosperity, and it created an exact chronological perspective, visible to passers-by on the outside to emphasize the relationship between Valentino and Rome. Following the structure of the Museum, the exhibit showed on the second floor the real exposition with the most significant creations, contrasting and at the same time cohabiting with the sacred presence of the altar and the modernity of Meier’s architecture. On the first floor, instead, the history of the maison: its archives and the dresses that many celebrities wore for the most important occasions, making Valentino the universal icon of fashion. Italian fashion designer Valentino, who has dressed some of the world's most glamorous women, announced, at Ara Pacis, that he will retire in January 2008.
