DAYDREAM DESTINATION: DUBAI
Unlimited opportunities to unwind in Do-buy...
by Bernd Dohrmann & Gioia del Colle

When in 1971 the seven independent emirates of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Sharjah, Ras al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah came together to form the UAE, Abu Dhabi became the capital city and Dubai the commercial centre. Mix between Middle East exoticism and and cosmopolitan lifestlyle, Dubai was - until 1830 - a fishing settlement, which was later taken over by the Bani Yas tribe and is today a vibrant and international city, which is even "sports capital" of the Middle East, attracting the biggest names in tennis, golf, sailing and so forth (Roger Federer lives there).
"If we built it, they will come" so runs the audacious Al-Maktoum family mantra. And it was right.

The city has many attractions, among which the historical district of Bastakia, where the old souks and covered marketplaces are, along with the Spices' and Gold Souks. Dubai is a shopping heaven, as the suburb of Jumeira shows. World class business and leisure facilities dots the place. Shopping malls, department stores, boutiques for any declination of taste, from Arabic craft to diamonds, from haute couture to high tech, from the inexpensive textiles to the Arabic perfumes.
Exciting all the year round, Dubai offers unlimited opportunities to unwind, from its beaches and waterfronts, to the several spas, to be pampered; from fishing trips to golf, from desert safaris to artificial islands and coastlines, from crazy buildings, to the largest indoor ski hall in the world...

With relaxed rules, sunny days and large number of activities, Dubai is for sure the best city to visit in the Middle East. No wonder then, that today it is a magnet when talking about attracting visitors, coming from all around the world...

A surrounding spot of Dubai. The real desert with his own rules. The modern kind of locomotion here are all-wheel cars or quad bikes.

Dubai signifies "do buy". This is one of the many malls at the Jumeirah Beach Road in the heart of Dubai.

The old and traditional trading place next the city creek in the old part of Dubai. A very good place to have a little personal contact with the population.

One thousand and One nights ambience in Jumeirah Dubai. The Madinat (half mall and half hotel) next to the 7 stars hotel Burj alArab hotel is a small own world with a taste of Venice and the architecture of the old middle-east (...a kind of modern disneyland for tourists...)

Bernd Dohrmann sent us his personal text about his trip, in order to give to our readers a first hand impression about the place.
"Tents and sand...that the first idea you have of the Arabic Gulf, when you think about Lawrence of Arabia. But as soon as you arrive in the UAE, you get the impression that you've just used the Delorian for a...time trip. Dubai grew in a considerable way since 1950, transforming into a metropolis, being today bigger than Manhattan. There, building construction never stops and goes on 24 hours a day, the desert is lighted during the nights and the city continually grows into a business land, which hosts only the 15% of indigenous people. With the oil boom of the 50s and thanks to the skills of Sheik Rashid bin Zayed, Dubai morphed from fishers' village into one of the most growing cities all around the world, competing with New York, Hong Kong and Shangai.
As soon as you land, you'll be dazzled and you'll live the same sensation for the time you spend there: artificial and breathtaking beaches, artificial islands, indoor ski, the tallest constructions of the world and the most impressing hotels... Even though I travelled a lot in my lifetime, I could not help and stood... speechless. But, if you consider attentively the issue, you realize that there is always the... other side of the coin. Dubai is in fact the biggest construction site of the world, with enormous crates, unfinished buildings and chaos, and traffic. And one should not forget the garbage, which is evident, specially along the highways. For that reasons, I asked myself if it is so much desirable to have all the shimmering gold, the economic growth, the seven stars hotel, when the land loses its origins, its traditions. In fact, if you wish to discover what is Dubai, behind the "vacation packages", you have to be ready to spend a lot - a great lot - of time by car, to check out the infinite desert, the villages nested in the valleys, and the blue wadi. Only then, you'll notice that time has stopped by...".
