THE WOODEN CHURCHES OF PODHALE IN POLAND
Panoramic virtual tour on a CD through wooden churches in the south of Poland.
by Karol Kwiatek

I would like to present a new CD with panoramic virtual tour that was created in Poland. Panometr which won the award of the Microentrepreneur of the Year 2006 (for the innovative solutions) in Poland is designing virtual tours on CD and DVD using modern technologies. Macromedia Director MX 2004 and SPi-V as a panoramic viewer were used to create the multimedia presentation of wooden gothic churches.

Virtual tour – invitation to sightseeing

The purpose of this editorial series is to depict the most significant historical monuments of Little Poland presented in the new technology called “virtual tours”. The selection of the first topic was intentional. There are more prominent relics including Krakow’s monuments. However, the less well-known wooden churches possess particular charm and attract many visitors. They depict the work of Polish carpenters who usually learnt the craft by themselves. From among 237 various wooden objects of Little Poland Voivodship, 150 of which has survived until today, the authors chose four (in the Archdiocese of Krakow), which are part of a dense group commonly known as the churches of Podhale.

Nestled into surrounding aged trees, these historic churches possess a stunning uniqueness. The churches together with mountainous setting and the Gorals’ folk culture represent to visitors the preservation of cultural values and the spirit of Poland. This publication aim is to encourage visitors from abroad and within Poland itself, to experience one of the most picturesque places of Poland and possibly of Europe. This small area covers extraordinary treasures of nature and cultural activity such as:

- Pieniny National Park
- Gorce National Park
- exciting rafting on Dunajec river
- dams and the power station on Dunajec river
- sport centre at the top of an extinct volcano
- numerous villages of admirable appearance often unique in the scale of Poland

This region of Poland, called Podhale, offers a great opportunity to see the sights close by such as Poland’s winter capital of Zakopane, adjacent Spisz, neighbouring Slovakia and above all, the wooden Gothic churches.

Wooden churches on a CD
There are four wooden churches presented on this CD. They are situated in the south of Poland, only 100 kilometers from Krakow.

There are 4 to 6 panoramas for every church. This virtual tour consists of 26 interactive spherical panoramas, more than 100 descriptions and really nice folk music that was played by local music groups.

This presentation is available in four languages: English, German, Italian and Polish.

Director and SPi-V
Presentation on this CD was built using Macromedia Director MX 2004. Aldo Hoeben’s viewer for panoramas (http://fieldofview.com/) was implemented in the project. During the creation Aldo launched a new version of license – an ‘unlimited’ one that enabled the author to add a license to as many XML files as possible. The minimum requirements for this presentation are:
- Microsoft Windows
- Graphic card 3D
- min. 16MB of video memory (64MB recommended)
- resolution: 1024x768 or more

More information about this virtual tour may be found here.
