The Renström Sweden's deepest Mine
Enter into the heart of the...Earth
by Marco Trezzini

Imagine a narrow place, made of labyrinth's style cramped and dark alleys. Drop the outside temperature to 14°/16° degrees all the year round. Get an elevator (or hit the right hotspot!) and enter into the heart of the...Earth.

Welcome into the Renström mine...

Opened in 1952, the mine has a polymetallic ore body, containing copper, zinc, lead, gold and silver. At 1,240 metres under surface, Renström is the deepest underground mine in Sweden, where the explorations have gone even deeper, since - at 1,700 - meters there has been interesting findings. The mine needs a workforce of 120 people.

Photographer: Jonas Carlson of VirtualSweden.se.

Where: Renström Mine, Boliden, Sweden.

When: March 22nd 2008.

Why: "One of the dreams I have had was to go down a mine. My wife´s cousin lives Sweden's Mining area that is called Boliden, he pulled some strings that made my trip down the deepest mine in Sweden possible. The temperature is constant all year round in the cave. I think it was around 14-16 degrees. When we were down in the mine my guide took me to all the places that are important so that I could shoot panoramas of them. The workshop, the place where they are drilling for minerals, places where they recently blew up parts of the mountain. When we went there it was pitch dark and we only had small torches. So we used the torches and long shutter-time to paint the images."

How/Technical Details: Nikon D3 and a 16mm fisheye lens. Kiwi-head and a Manfrotto CarbonONE tripod. Rainclothes, boots, helmets and small torches (and long shutter time, to paint the images).

Jonas Carlson is a self learned photographer, who entered the VRs industry back in 1998. Soon after, he published a book, with 360° images taken in Stockholm, which is written in English and Swedish (ISBN 9789185305124) and contains more than 100 panoramics. His competence in panoramic images covers several fields, as his portfolio shows: from landscapes to weddings and sport photography. Jonas runs virtualsweden.se, which has been cited among Netscape cool site of the day and Pick of the day by Yahoo. He loves to take bubbles within Churches and still has some 40 medieval churches to process. Jonas is father of two children.
