The basilica was formed by the union of the pre-existing Church of San Lorenzo (330 A.D.) and the Church of the Blessed Virgin (432 – 440 A.D.). One of them has a women’s gallery, and the ciborium, carved by Roman marble workers in 1148, is still visible. This is the most ancient artwork of this kind. Architect: The first basilica was built under Constantine. Pelagius II erected the second one, and Honorius III (1216) incorporated the two churches into a single basilica.
