NEW VIRTUAL REALITY SITE - FULLSCREENQTVR.COM Panoramas.dk and VRMAG launch new fullscreen directory. by Michelle Bienias The growing popularity and success of Hans Nyberg’s panoramas.dk, especially the fullscreen panorama of the week, was the impetus for creating a fullscreen QuickTime Virtual Reality website – a thumbnail directory of high-quality fullscreen panoramas on the Internet. High-speed Internet users will now have quick and easy visual access to thousands of virtual locations across the globe via a thumbnail directory of 360-degree, fullscreen QuickTime Virtual Reality panoramas.

Hans Nyberg and Marco Trezzini (VRMAG’s Editorial Director) worked on the idea for several months and now, with technology partners REALVIZ, Kodak, Fuji, Canon and Peace River Studios, have just launched the first stage of the website. “Our mission is to break down physical, geographic and moral barriers by providing visual knowledge of the beauty of the world around us,” says Marco Trezzini. “It's a tall order but once you've stood on top of Mount Everest, planted your feet on the soil of Mars, marveled at the beauty of the Vatican basilicas and been a part of the raucous New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square, you'll understand what we are striving to achieve.” Currently, fullscreenQTVR.com has listings of fullscreen panoramas from panoramas.dk, vrmag.org and vrway.com but will soon be expanding to include listings from across the Internet: the goal is to create a comprehensive directory of high-quality fullscreen QTVRs. When the second version of the website is developed it will be dynamic and a form will allow photographers and VR producers to submit links to their projects and direct links to their fullscreens, along with all required information and uploading of thumbnails. Submissions will be reviewed for quality requirements and then published on the website, with all appropriate copyrights. Hans Nyberg started panoramas.dk as a directory of QuickTime Virtual Reality and Java panoramas located throughout the Internet. The directory now has links to more than 30,000 panoramas. In 2002, Hans added a new feature – the fullscreen panorama of the week – which quickly became a regular destination for hundreds of thousands of viewers. Hans strives to bring newsworthy photographs, like the Top of Mount Everest and New Year’s Eve at Times Square, to the Internet community at large. Marco Trezzini has been involved with virtual reality since 1999 and was instrumental in the founding of several VR-related companies, including WebIdentity,VRWAY and VRMAG, the VR photography and travel magazine. FullscreenQTVR.com is one of various common steps finalized to establish high quality fullscreen QuickTime Virtual Reality as a standard for photographic virtual reality exploration on the Internet.
